I have been enjoying watching A.D. and have been overlooking historical and Biblical inaccuracies which one may come to expect from a NBC show about something in the Bible. However, I am very concerned about the intentional heresy that the show propagates concerning the Holy Spirit.
Jehovah’s Witnesses would approve that in the show the Holy Spirit is called “it” and “itself,” because they don’t believe in the divinity or personhood of the Spirit. Yet, even in the NWT Bible (their own heretical translation) concedes that the “emphatic demonstrative male pronoun” demands the we refer to the Holy Spirit as a He in John 16:13.
Why would the makers of the show A.D. do this? Beats me. They have to be apostates with deliberately bad theology or secularists that never read the Bible before and the thought never occurred to them.
Now, some might wonder why it is so important to refer to the Holy Spirit as a “guy.” Well, there are two things we can be sure of from the Scripture. First, God is not a female (man “is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. For man does not originate from woman, but woman from man,” 1 Cor 11:7-8). Second, He is a Person, not an impersonal force. So, when we call God a “He” as He refers to Himself in the original languages of the Scripture, we are not affirming that He has XY chromosomes (though Jesus in fact would and still does at the very least.) Rather, we affirm His Personhood and dispel any speculations that God is goddess or anything of the sort.
That’s all for now. I’ll update with a future installment if they botch anything else really obvious and important.
