In this series we will be giving 25 reasons why the Jehovah’s Witnesses have their Christology and Trinitarian theology wrong. We will make our case right from the Scriptures:
12. Christ is “coming quickly.”
Throughout John’s vision Jesus speaks of “coming quickly.”
For example, Jesus Christ says, “I am coming to you quickly, and I will make war against them with the sword of My mouth” (Rev 2:16).
Now, why is this important? Let’s take a look at a very similar character who is referenced in Rev 19:
And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war. His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems; and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself. He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses. From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty (Rev 19:11-15).
We know this is Christ because chapter 19 in Revelation specifies that He comes to judge and that there is a sword in His mouth. He is also named “the Word of God” and differentiated from the Father (“He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God,” Rev 19:15.)
This is why when Revelation says, “Behold, I am coming quickly…I am the Alpha and the Omega,” (Rev 22:12-13) we know it is the “Lord God” who is also “the Alpha and the Omega” (Rev 1:8).
a clear teaching making clear distinctions – Amen, Come, Lord Jesus. Rev. 22:20. See the Lord Jesus in His Incarnation, in His substitutionary Atonement, in His Resurrection. Amen, Come, Lord Jesus.
Craig, you’re conflating persons and titles.
Scripture is beyond clear that the “Lord God” is the Father of Jesus Christ ( Luke 1:32).
In the Book Of Revelation, (4:8) it is the Father alone who is in view, he alone is seated on his throne, the four living creatures exclaim “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come.” No Triune Being is in view here Craig, they aren’t saying Holy 3 times due to the Trinity (painful to think people may think such a thing), that’s just presupposing your beliefs unto what is written, continuing on though, it is Jesus, who is the Lamb who comes to the scene in the following chapter and takes the sealed book from the Fathers right hand (5:7) “And he came, and he taketh it out of the right hand of him that sat on the throne.”.
Later on in the same Chapter all created things declare (5:13) “Unto him that sitteth on the throne, and unto the Lamb, be the blessing, and the honor, and the glory, and the dominion, for ever and ever.”.
Now he who sits on the throne is the “Lord God, the Almighty”, and not the Lamb, as the preceding chapter and verses show, to say otherwise is to author complete confusion.
This common phraseology which is repeated throughout the book, “Lord God, The Almighty” is always in reference to the Father. The above verses testify to that, as do the following chapters (21:22) “And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God the Almighty, and the Lamb, are the temple thereof.”. So much so that this is said to be the Song of the Lamb, who is obviously Jesus (15:3-4) “And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, O Lord God, the Almighty; righteous and true are thy ways, thou King of the ages. Who shall not fear, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy; for all the nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy righteous acts have been made manifest.”.
“for thou only art holy”, sounds similar to what the Lord said to the man who called him good (Mark 10:18) “Why callest thou me good? none is good save one, even God.”. (Hint: He was not trying to indirectly tell the man that he himself was God Almighty, he is clearly correcting him, seriously the lengths people go to).
To drive home the point more quickly, Revelation 1:8 cannot be speaking of anyone other than the Father due to..
1. The following chapters define for us without doubt who the Lord God, The Almighty is.
2. To say that the Lord God is the Lamb is to make the whole book of Revelation unintelligible and confusing , again the above verses are clear.
3. Jesus Himself, The Lamb, in his song defines it for us “O Lord God, the Almighty”.
Scripture is clear and consistent Craig.
Injecting pre-conceived beliefs into the texts in order to refute heresy will cause confusion and not do good.
I don’t believe John was writing a complete riddle filled with contradictions, conflations of persons and titles, unless Sabellianism is true, then such interpretations mite be warranted. I suggest you stop looking at titles such as “Lord God”, “The Almighty”, “The Most High”, “The Living God” as shared titles, and start seeing them as actual titles that define an actual person.
Unless you want to go down Tertullians line of reasoning, as he said in Against Praxaes Chapter 17…
“They more readily supposed that the Father acted in the Son’s name, than that the Son acted in the Father’s; although the Lord says Himself, “I am come in my Father’s name;”and even to the Father He declares, “I have manifested Thy name unto these men;” whilst the Scripture likewise says, “Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord,” that is to say, the Son in the Father’s name. And as for the Father’s names, God Almighty, the Most High, the Lord of hosts, the King of Israel, the “One that is,” we say (for so much do the Scriptures teach us) that they belonged suitably to the Son also, and that the Son came under these designations, and has always acted in them, and has thus manifested them in Himself to men. “All things,” says He, “which the Father hath are mine.”Then why not His names also? When, therefore, you read of Almighty God, and the Most High, and the God of hosts, and the King of Israel, the “One that is,” consider whether the Son also be not indicated by these designations, who in His own right is God Almighty, in that He is the Word of Almighty God, and has received power over all; is the Most High, in that He is “exalted at the right hand of God,” as Peter declares in the Acts; is the Lord of hosts, because all things are by the Father made subject to Him; is the King of Israel because to Him has especially been committed the destiny of that nation; and is likewise “the One that is,” because there are many who are called Sons, but are not. As to the point maintained by them, that the name of Christ belongs also to the Father, they shall hear (what I have to say) in the proper place. Meanwhile, let this be my immediate answer to the argument which they adduce from the Revelation of John: “I am the Lord which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty;” and from all other passages which in their opinion make the designation of Almighty God unsuitable to the Son. As if, indeed, He which is to come were not almighty; whereas even the Son of the Almighty is as much almighty as the Son of God is God.”
Praxaes or whoever was being referred to in the closing sentences by Tertullian was actually right, Tertullian so seemingly caught up in wanting to refute him that he went to the lengths above, authored confusion, conflated names, and therefor conflated the Father and the Son into one person without even realizing it, which is something that according to Tertullian, these/this Monarchian/Modalist/Noetuses/Sabellian/Whatever they/he were/was, would not even do such a thing, even they/he knew better.
And If you can, try read this again without laughing and thinking “really, seriously Tertullian” ;
“All things,” says He, ” which the Father hath are mine.” Then why not His names also?”.
Point being, don’t compromise on the plain teachings, meanings and simplicity of scripture in your efforts to refute heresy. They may be right, you may be wrong 🙂 Peace to you Craig, and be careful not to sear your conscious when it comes to idolatry (don’t kiss pictures, bow to them, burn incense or light candles to them. Keep yourself from idols.)
(P. S. I’m not a Watchtower Witness nor do i subscribe to their heretical doctrine, the Son is the Word Of God, the Only-Begotten, and is very God.)
Be wary of making an idol out of one’s own personal interpretation.
This is why when Revelation says, “Behold, I am coming quickly…I am the Alpha and the Omega,” (Rev 22:12-13) we know it is the “Lord God” who is also “the Alpha and the Omega” (Rev 1:8).
That is not true, Jehovah is spoken of as “coming ” also, not because he is Jesus but because they both share oneness of purpose…Jesus would never “come” if not sent by God.
Be wary of making an idol out of one’s own personal interpretation.
That applies to anyone… including you
Just an observation on the alpha and omega being God, even if it was said about Christ..which im sure it is not at Daniel 2v37 Nebuchadnezzar is called “King of Kings” this doesn’t mean he is Jesus or Jesus was Nebuchadnezzar does it. Even if Jesus was the alpha and omega as a title, it would only mean he was the start and finish of Gods purpose not that he was God himself.
