In this series we will be giving 25 reasons why the Jehovah’s Witnesses have their Christology and Trinitarian theology wrong. We will make our case right from the Scriptures:
- Honor the Son as the Father is honored.
Ever wonder why the Old Testament is so serious about “honor thy father and mother” that it states, “He who strikes his father or his mother shall surely be put to death” (Ex 21:15)? It sounds cruel, sure, but is it not just that we are punished on Judgment Day eternally more for crimes against our heavenly Father if we are outside of Christ? Such a punishment in Exodus for striking a parent should not surprise us, so serious is the principle behind honoring parents.
Honor, an important function in the Bible, is ascribed chiefly to God.
O Lord my God, you are very great. You are clothed with honor and majesty (Ps 104:1).
We are to honor no one and nothing as we honor God. Yet, the Jehovah’s Witness cannot explain how is it then we honor the Son even as we honor the Father:
[A]ll will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him (John 5:23).
The word “honor” occurs 23 times in the New Testament. It consistently refers to three types of people: God, parents, and the government. Are we charged to honor our parents equal to the Father? No. Are we told to honor the king equal to the Father? No. Yet, we are told to honor the Son “even as they honor the Father.” Yet, we worship the Father! There is no higher honor than to literally by worshiped as God. How can we then honor the Son even as the Father if we do not honor Him as God Himself?
